Frequently Asked Questions

Every season parents and players have questions about MCSC. To help with those questions we have created this Frequently Asked Questions page. We, the members of the Board of Directors, hope you find this page helpful. If after looking at this page you still have questions please feel free to contact any board member.

Thank You,
MCSC Board

Question: I don’t have any experience with soccer but I would still like to pitch in. How can I help?

Answer: MCSC is always in need of volunteers. If you have the energy and time we will warmly welcome you no matter how much or little soccer experience you have. We will provide you with all the tools and training you will need for any given task. If you are interested please feel free to see our volunteer page for more information.

Question: What is the difference between Rec and League?

Answer: Please read the Rec Information Sheet and the League Information Sheet for an answer to this question.

Question: Why is the League schedule not posted earlier in the season?

Answer: There are many steps to making both the complete season schedule and the many weekly schedules. There is a complete discussion of the schedule process on the league schedule page.

Question: Why were the League game scores and stats not posted in the Herald like Fall 2008?

Answer: The Board believes that the posting of the scores and stats created an unhealthy attitude of competition and increased pressure on the players. This attitude was especially evident in the younger age groups. The stated goal of the ISA and MCSC is to teach the fundamentals of Soccer in a healthy, fun environment. Therefore, the Board has chosen not to post scores for the Spring 2009 season. MCSC does not endorse or support any postings made this spring. Any postings were made by private individuals without the consent of MCSC.

Question: How are Recreation teams chosen each season?

Answer: After registration all names are picked at random and placed on teams. The exception to this rule is that parents who volunteer to coach will have their child placed on their team. However, we will do our best to accommodate special circumstances and requests.

Question: How are League teams chosen each season?

Answer: Due to player numbers and age distribution there may be only one team in any given age group. In age groups that have enough players for multiple teams each team is initially chosen at random while trying to maintain all girls teams and all boys teams where possible. After their first season together we attempt to keep the teams the same for subsequent seasons.

Question: Why are there not all girls teams at the older age divisions?

Answer: Due to player numbers and age distribution there may be only one team in any given age group. Every effort is made each season to register enough players to allow for all girls or all boys teams. When there are not enough players to allow for all girls/boys teams then coed teams will be made.

Question: Can I choose my child’s coach? Or Can I change my child’s coach?

Answer: As explained above teams are chosen at random or as numbers allow. Please feel free to contact any board member for special requests. We will try very hard to reach a reasonable solution on you choice of coach.

Question: Can I purchase a t-shirt the same color as my child’s?

Answer: Every season we only order enough T-shirts for each team and their coaches. We do have many MCSC items available for sale in the MCSC Store.

Question: Why don't we keep score?

Answer: Per ISA guidelines the score is not officially kept until League ages U-12 and older. In the older ages the score is not kept for "friendly" competitions and scrimmages.

Question: If we do not keep score how do we judge improvement of our teams and players.

Answer: This article by the US Youth Soccer Association (USYSA) gives a very good answer to this question.

Question: What is offside?

Answer: FIFA provides a very good explanation to this rule here.

Question: When is offside applied?

Answer: Offside is only applied in league ages U-12 and older.
